While Dr. Johnston was here, he talked to us about climate change, and the effects it has on us. We also learned the cause of climate change (we are the biggest cause), and how we can help.

While he was here, Dr. Johnston made me think about the problems we have in our world such as climate change. Climate change has a huge impact on our world and on us. The biggest issue is we human beings, and the only creatures on Earth to fix it are we human beings. Everything starts with a little push, the students of The American School of Doha and the students of WLU.

The three things I learned as a result of his visit are:

1.The poor are saving the world more than the rich (people say that the poor have nothing, but they are saving the world by having nothing. We tend to throw our old thing away and buy new things. That emits a lot of carbon, both the process of making and throwing.)

2. Waterloo is in the middle of the three Great Lakes, Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, and Lake Ontario

3.Children are the biggest influence in stopping climate change.

1.Dr.johnston talked about the ifferences and the similarities of qatar and canada and he said that we pollute with everything we do, and if we see an ipod on the shelf we shouldn't buy it anyways because if we buy it, the shp will get more so it will pollute.
2.It made me feel weird because i realized that everything i do pollutes and that i contribute to cliate change way too much.
3.Oil sand in canada, waterloo is 45 degrees north and doha is 22 so that is half way.

1. Dr .Johnston explained the similarities and the differences between Qatar and Canadian enviroments. He told us that we should fully be educated about Climate Change before we take an action plan.
2. After his whole presentation, I felt that even the littlest things, like turning off a bedroom light, will make a difference. He explained how are partnership is going to work.
3.- The climates of Doha and Waterloo are affected differently by Climate Change.
- I learned that us consumers have alot of profound impact on the enviroment and wasting
-I also learned that companies have techniques that make their clients wan to buy more

Dr. Johnston talked about a variety of things. He told us of the problems around the world, for example the oil sands in Canada, or the emissions here in Qatar. He told us that Canada and Qatar have similarities and differences in the climate, as well as climate change.

Dr. Johnston's visit made me feel a bit overwhelmed about climate change. He told us about so many problems and it made me wonder how I as a single person could make a change. However, he gave us simple ideas that we can do to make a small but meaningful change. For example, purchasing less stuff, or turning off outlets that are not being used. This has changed my perspective a little bit about how this partnership will be. I don't feel as grudging as I did before.

I learned...
-Climate change is not only environmental, but social, economic and politic as well.
-I learned about how companies make merchandise so it will only last long enough for a customer to trust them, but then they also plan for it to break so that they will buy a new one.
-I learned about the oil sands, where people strip large pieces of land of its vegetation, just to get oil out of the sands.

Dr. Johnston Talked to us about one of the main sources of fossil fuels in Canada. Then Mr. Johnston's cousin talked to us about political status with carbon emissions and the government is doing to decrease the amount of carbon emissions. Then Dr. Johnston told us about the way that industries intend their products to brake at a certain time so people will buy another one. He also told us about planned and perceived obsolescence. Then we talked about how to decrease our carbon footprints.

1. Dr. Johnston explained the similarities and the the differences between the two climates in Doha and Canada. He also told us that we need to be fully educated in climate change before we make a action plan to try and change it.
2.After is visit I felt like even the littlest thing like turning off a bathroom light or not buying the newest ipod can have a profound effect if many people do it. He also told us about how are partnership will work and that we should create a platform to communicate on.
3. That companies make objects that are planned to break so that you have to buy new ones. We learned that we need a balance between the environment and the economy. Finally, we learned that we are the reason for climate change because we are the ones who are releasing the carbon emmisions into the air.

Today, Dr. Johnston shared a lot of new information. He started out explaining about the location of Qatar and Canada. Qatar is much closer to the equator about 22 degrees latitude and Canada is 45 degrees latitude. Canada is much further away from the equator so the temperature is much cooler. He also shared that Canada is also affected by climate change. They are extracting oil from sand and that is creating a huge impact on the environment. During this project, he explained that our mentors in the university are going to teach us more about climate change. We are going to end up creating action plans and we are going to make a huge impact in the world. Dr. Johnston made me really realize how important it is to stop climate change. He explained that the Earth acts like one complete system and how if one component isn't working the whole system is affected. I realized that we really need to make a change. This meeting made me more motivated about this problem. I learned that consuming so much and the affects of media is greatly affecting climate change, we use sand to extract oil, and that we are the ones that started the climate change problem and that we are the ones that are going to stop it.

Wow I never knew Mr. Johnston's family members are also contributing in being the change! Dr. Johnston, Mr. Johnston's brother, told us about where in Canada he lives and the differences between there and here. I learned that they are about half way from the the north pole, while we are half way from where they are. So basically we are three-quarters away from the north pole. Also, he told us that they have dunes there too! This was very surprising to hear! Although, their dunes are where they get oil and such from, so they're trying to clear out the area there. And there was a few other things I learned too, but overall I think his visit was a positive thing to me and has got me even mroe excited for this project/our partnership with them because of some things Dr. Johnston explained to us about his students. For example, he told us that they will also teach us more about climate change, so that'll be cool and interesting!

- Dr. Johnston shared with us a lot of stuff about Climate Change. He shared with us how Canada is further from the equator, so it's colder than Doha because Doha is closer to the equator so it is warmer. He also shared how his students in Canada are very excited to start this project. Dr. Johnston's cousin, Doug, told us how yesterday when he walked outside at the end of school that he saw all our buses lines up and turned on running, and he said that an idea of an action plan that we could do is figure out a way that we can have those lines of buses out there not running, maybe turned off when they are waiting for students to get on.
- The impact of his cisit imapacted my feelings about Climate Change because now, I see how bad this is and how things could change and bad things can happen to the next generation.
- Three new things I learnt was...
1. The closer you are to the equator, the hotter the country is.
2. The furhter you are from the equator, the coler the country is.
3. Planned and Preserved Obsolescence.

Dr. Johnston explained t us what were the difference, and the similarities of Canada and Qatar, mainly in the impact part. He explained why Canada is so much colder than Qatar, and he said it was because we were closer to the equator. He explained to us what the situation in Canada was, like what were they doing that affected climate change in a positive way and the negative way too. Dr. Johnston brought along his cousin, who is a lawyer, and he explained what was it that he loved so much about helping, or being part of the climate change awareness. He also explained to us how was being a lawyer and “going green” related.
His visit kind of changed my feelings about this project because I can see that he is pretty excited about it, and he told us that his students were too. He also told us all the things that his students back in Canada had to do. That made me realizes that our partners back in Canada are putting a lot of effort into it as well
I learned some of the things that are going on in Canada like for example that there is this place in Canada were they have found oil in the sand, but to get it out there has to be nothing on top, so they have to take “all green” out so that they can have more oil. I also learned that there is this thing companies do for their products to last long enough so that you trust them, but short enough so that you have to buy another one. The third thing I learned was that when you turn off the lights the energy is still producing, but it is not being used in the moment, it is just being stored.

Well we learned that the area is like our bodies. It needs all systems to function properly and if you take one system away then all the systems will fall apart. He made me more interested in doing more than just awarness maybe something bigger. One thing would be that the systems have to work together to function properly, that even one person can make a difference, and it doesn't matter what your job is you can make a difference as a teacher or even a lawyer.

On thursday we talked to Doctor Johnston, and we talked about climate changing in Canada, and how it affect us the same way. Doctor Johnston talked to us about how excited the University students were. Doctor Johnston and his cousin were really impress when he saw all the busses standing there with the air conditioner on for like an hour before the students get into the bus. I learned that in Canada there are people working on this large areas that are really rich and they take the soil from the sand, this is in like the center of Canada. I also learned that we can make a difference for very little things that we do in our daily life.

Aleen - Dr. Johnston came today and talked us about climate change. He broadened our perspective on the carbon emissions we are releasing into the atmosphere and further explained our project with the WLU students. He discussed the differences between the landscape in Qatar and the landscape in Waterloo. He talked about why Qatar is so much warmer then Waterloo, and showed us the different latitudes. Then, Mr. Johnston talked about planned and perceived obsolescence and supply and demand. Another guest speaker was Doug, who is a lawyer, and he talked about what he did for his job and his passion for the environment. In, conclusion they talked about how little things we do can make a difference and how we can start thinking about our action plans. He really impacted my feelings about our climate change project because if 2 large groups of people on opposite sides of the world can educate each other and make a difference, and if every school began doing this and every company, then we really can be the change. I learned from Mr. Doug that any job you do, you can still follow your passions for environment. I learned from Mr. Johnston what planned and perceived obsolescence is. And from Dr. Johnston, I learned more about Waterloo's geography and how both Canada and Qatar have sand dunes. Thanks to them, I now have more ideas about what to do for an action plan!

Dr.Johnston talked about what climate change is... And a bit of how we can stop it.
^I learned about the difference of Doha and Canada. Also that they have dunes in Canada... And the sand, the pools, right next to the river, and if one spills, whole U.S. and Canada would be affected.
I learned a lot of things I didn't know before, and I love this class...

During his presentation, Dr Johnston shared his passion for helping and saving the world and how he, Mr. Johnston and their cousin, Doug, had incorporated their passion into their work so uniquely. He shared with us things that we could adjust with our lifestyle to help save the world. He also explained how it is not fully our fault that we consume and waste so much, it is the big companies' faults. They intentionally make their products last long enough that we trust them, but short enough that it will break and we have to throw it away and come back for another one. Others will continue to make more and more, newer, improved versions of their products. We all want to buy the newer version and throw out the old one, despite the old one still in perfect conditions. Like Mac, they continue to make different, improved versions of their laptops and iPods. We all want to buy the latest version even though our old one still works perfectly. However, if you do keep your old one, accessories for iPods only work for the latest version and will not work properly with the old, so you will need to buy one. Then Dr. Johnston introduced us to the cycle of consumption and production. He asked what difference it would make if we did not buy the new iPod we saw at a store, you may think not buying one iPod makes a difference because it's already there at the store. Now, if you didn't buy that iPod, some one else will. If you think about it, then only one iPod was sold, not two. If the consumption rate lowers then the production rate will also decrease with it. Doug, their cousin, introduced to us oil sands in Canada and how big of a problem it is. Oil sand are sand that holds oil that can be used in cars and power our lives. They showed us a bird's eye image of it and amazed us with the horror that the production of oil sand. Now what scared us even more was how large it is compared to Qatar. The impact of his visit about our Climate Change partnership with WLU was huge. I had thought of this project as talking and cooperating with a bunch of strangers, far away that we did not know. Suddenly, because of his visit, I feel much more enthusiastic to do this project because we really know how much were all able to help our world before it's too late.
